Since 2017, the TUC Yorkshire and Humber has worked in partnership with LO-Norway (the Norwegian TUC) to deliver an annual summer exchange programme for young members. This year we are excited to expand the exchange to Wales, the South West, Yorkshire and the Humber and the Northern region. As in the last few years, this year’s exchange will focus on the LO-Norway Summer Patrol project.
The LO-Norway Summer Patrol has taken place every summer for over thirty years and involves young trade union activists going into workplaces which tend to have a higher density of young workers and poorer terms and conditions due to a lack of collective bargaining. The young trade union activists talk to the young workers about their experiences and the role of a trade union. The Summer Patrol acts as a positive first introduction to trade unions for many young workers, as well as a data collection exercise in order to build up an understanding of working experiences.
The TUC / LO Norwegian exchange offers young members from the UK the opportunity to travel to Norway to take part in the summer patrol and see how it all works. They’ll then come back to the UK and play a lead role in delivering a patrol in their region. It is a fantastic opportunity for any young members looking to grow their campaigning, organising and recruitment skills.
Accommodation, travel in Norway and some subsistence is covered by the LO. However, young members would need to gain union sponsorship to cover travel to Norway and any subsistence associated with this travel.
