Chancellor Rachel Reeves has announced our new Labour Government will make a £600 million investment to train up to 60,000 additional skilled construction workers, who will help build the 1.5 million new homes that the Deputy Prime Minister, Angela Rayner, is pushing to achieve.

The building industry is facing significant staff shortages; there are currently 35,000 job vacancies and skilled people are in demand.

The new tradespeople and upskilled workforce will get Britain building again and provide young people with the opportunities for high skilled, well paid jobs.

The money will fund new technical colleges and help existing ones deliver more construction courses.

The Skills Bootcamps will be expanded, helping new entrants and existing workers to upskill. Colleges will boost the number of teachers with construction experience, helping to train the next generation of workers.

Employers will be provided with £2000 for every foundation apprentice they take on and retain in the industry. An additional £80 million will support employers to deliver bespoke training.

“This will start to address the challenge of building 1.5 million new homes for people that desperately need them.”:
Tim Balcon, Chief Executive of the Construction Industry
